This is an active log book by the author, and is updated after each
flight. It's not quite like being there, but it describes some of the fun and excitement.
From June 2 to June 9, 2003, I went to Powered Paragliding School in Saint-Michel-de-Bellechasse, Québec. The instructor was Eric Dufour, the founder of Paratour, a leading powered paragliding company in training, manufacture and sales with headquarters now in Florida. Eric is one of the leading paramotorists and powered paragliding instructors of North America and he is well known worldwide. I feel so fortunate to have had him as instructor. I always felt reassured and safe under his direction.
If you live in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick or Prince Edward Island, and are interested in taking up the sport, you may want to check out Powered Paragliding New Brunswick, the new Powered Paragliding School in Fredericton, New Brunswick; the only PPG school in the Maritimes.
The course was physically tough for me as I am a bit of a "couch potato" with bad knees, but I managed to accomplish the required training and got in nine solo flights before returning to Nova Scotia with a powered paraglider (Paratour SDRDM Light with a Sting 120 paraglider) in the trunk of the car. The actual motor is a 22hp, 100cc RDM engine. The paramotor with backpack/harnass weighs about 52 pounds (with empty fuel tank).
You will notice I had quite a few motor problems during my first 12 flights. As stated below, I believe the problem was caused by the fuel tank not venting properly. The motor would lose power and cut out. With that fixed, the motor works flawlessly. I was never in peril during the motor failures. They occurred at take-off or shortly thereafter when I was still above the take-off field. I never feared for my life.

Motor stalled at idle speed. Turbulent air. Eric Dufour - instructor.
I had been using a wooden propeller on my machine in Quebec. The instructor suggested a composite propeller as a better alternative however he was waiting for some to arrive from Florida and they had not yet arrived when I left for Nova Scotia.
The propeller arrived Thursday, June 19, and was installed on the machine without any problems.

Motor failure
June 20, 2003 (flight #10) - I ran the motor to show it to my brother-in-law, Cecil. It seemed to work well.
Later in the afternoon I did some ground handling with the Sting 140 paraglider. The session also went very well.
Later on I went to Cecil's with the paramotor to possibly do my first flight in West Pubnico if the wind died down. I set up the windsock. At about 7:30pm, the wind conditions looked good and Cecil and my sister, Mariette helped me gear up in the field behind their house. I ran the motor again. It stalled a couple of times even at 1/4 speed but then it seemed to work fine at both full power and at idle.
As I was to start my first launch, and had the paramotor on my back all warmed up, the motor stalled and Cecil had trouble restarting it. I had to place the paramotor on the ground again to restart it with some difficulty.
The second attempt was better and in no time I was in the air. My takeoff was not the best but I got up ok. The motor ran well at full power and I circled to the right and reached an altitude of 400 or 500 ft. With the motor at cruising speed and about 1000 ft. downwind from the landing field, the wind was stronger than I expected and for a while I was not making any headway. I did not want to gain any more altitude with more power. After a few minutes, I could see I was going ahead. As I approached the field for the landing the motor stalled as it reached idle speed. Glad I had not placed the motor at idle speed earlier. I made a fine and smooth landing within feet of my takeoff location. By then a crowd had gathered in Mariette's and Cecil's backyard.
I was asked to demonstrate the paramotor to the crowd. After starting and stalling a few times it seemed to be working fine at all speeds, but then all of a sudden I could only get about 2/3 power at full gas like I had experienced on two takeoffs in Québec. By throttling down and up and giving it a few quick spurts of power, the motor regained full power and seemed to work well at all speeds. Then all of a sudden, it stalls at 1/4 speed.
Something is not right with that engine.

Motor failure
June 28, 2003 (flight #11) - Flight #11 had to be aborted shortly after take-off due to the motor losing power and then stalling, after I gained about 200 ft. altitude. I had made some carb adjustments before the flight and the motor seemed to be working pretty good. At least, I had a good take-off and a good landing.

Just awesome!
July 1, 2003 (flight #12) - July 1st, Canada Day, I had the most wondrous flight. The motor worked flawlessly and I was in the air for 25 minutes, mostly at an altitude of 500 to 600 ft. on a perfect day. Take-off and landing was on the playing field at the school. A good crowd had gathered before take-off so I had lots of help with the preparation. I had a very good take-off and a standing-up landing which, I am sure, impressed the crowd.
I had suspected the motor problem might be with the fuel line and I found a dead house fly with many loose body parts in the fuel line and tank. The gas-line filter likely had prevented this debris from reaching the carburetor. Also, there were air or gasoline vapour bubbles forming in the fuel line when the motor was running and then stalling in what appeared to me to be a lack of fuel, as if the fuel tank was not venting properly.
Anyway, I removed the fuel tank with the gas line, up to and including the fuel filter and cleaned it properly and then reinstalled it with filtered fuel.
I started the motor with the cap of the fuel tank purposely not screwed down properly and it was running fine at a slow speed until the gas cap flew into the propeller and I hit the kill switch. No harm done to the propeller, however the gas cap is cracked and definitely vents now. I ran the motor again with the cracked gas cap screwed down and the motor seemed to work perfectly at all speeds. At this point, I decided to do Flight #12 (above). It was awesome!
Since Flight #10, when I noticed two small holes about 10cm from the tip of one of the propeller blades, I have had a small piece of duct tape over them with a matching piece on the other blade for balance. I feared the small holes would cause an increased air pressure in the hollow tip of the propeller when it is going at full speed (air pressure high enough to burst the propeller?). The two holes are on the leading edge of the tip.

Awesome!
July 6, 2003 (flight #13) - Simply awesome!! A most wonderful flight with take-off and landing at the school playing field.
With ground crew in tow, I flew the flawlessly operating machine to the Village historique and back to the school. Everything went perfectly. I even made several low passes and manoeuvers over the landing field for more fun and to gain experience (and to impress the gathering crowd). A super 45 minute flight!

Bummer
July 16, 2003 (flight #14) - A bummer of a flight! - At about 150 ft altitude while taking off and at full throttle I began hearing a clicking sound from the motor area. It certainly did not sound normal so I throttled down and prepared for my landing. The clicking sound disappeared when I throttled down.
I made a fine landing on the school grounds and then realized the prop had come apart at one end and struck the nylon lines of the prop cage and severed a couple of them. I can easily repair the lines.
I had run the motor at full speed before the flight both on the short mowed grass and again on my back right before the flight. All appeared fine. The power was great at takeoff with no strange sounds until I reached about 150 ft and was still climbing at full power when the clicking started.
I wrongly assumed a manufacture defect caused it to come apart during the flight. Striking the nylon lines of the cage damaged it some more. At the time, I was not aware of anything striking the propeller blade to cause it to fail.
A couple of days later, when my son was checking out my helmet and 2-way radios, he noticed one of the radios was damaged and had a crack in its case. Mystery solved. The 2-way radio on my chest strap had obviously come loose and hit the propeller as it dangled from my helmet. In spite of the hit, the radio still worked fine.
Flight time, 2 minutes.

Excellent flight
July 20, 2003 (flight #15) - Excellent flight! I received a wooden and a composite prop from Eric Dufour of Paratour on July 19, and mounted the wooden one for the flight.
Take-off was from the school field in West Pubnico. It was the afternoon of the final day of the festival week of "Chez Nous à Pombcoup" and right after the parade, with hundreds of people at the Centre de Pombcoup, not far away. Lots of people had been asking me when they could see me fly again and this was a great opertunity.
Both the take-off and landing were superb and the whole 45 minute flight was wonderful. I paraded from the school to the Village historique and back with my brother-in-law, Clyde d'Entremont, on the "ground control" radio.
What a great flight!

Rough landing
July 30, 2003 (flight #16) - Take-off and landing at field behind Danny and Carol Ann d'Entremont's house in Lower West Pubnico. A wonderful 60 minute flight from 7 to 8pm. By the end of the flight I was starting to get cold as the sun was low in the sky.
My worse landing so far. I had set my right wing to compensate for the engine torque which made the paraglider want to turn to the right. The setting essentially sped up the right wing as well as the whole machine since I no longer needed to use my left brake to go in a straight line.
I forgot to set it back to its landing position before landing, so the landing was fast and hard to control. The worse I got were grass stains on my right knee as I slid in for the landing.

First take-off all my myself
September 6, 2003 (flight #21) - Take-off and landing on the school field at West Pubnico. A wonderful 70 minute flight. I was alone and wanted to see if I could take-off all by myself.
I used a small collapsible wooden table from Canadian Tire to hold the paramotor 20 inches off the ground. That way, it was easier for me to get the paramotor on my back. After I was properly attached to it (or it to me), the small table was collapsed and kicked out of the way.

After visiting three Minke whales near Pubnico Point earlier in the morning in my boat, I wanted to see if I could see them from the paraglider. And so I did!
I could see two of the whales 2000 ft. below me at about 750 metres from shore. I even climbed up to 3000 feet above ground level on my way back to the school. This was my highest altitude yet.

Short flight. Flew over the Village historique. Executed my first "touch-and-go". Motor lost power.
June 29, 2004 (flight #43) - Short flight. Flew over the Village historique.
This was my first flight with the new replacement gas cap received from Paratour the day before.
All went well until I successfully executed my first "touch-and-go". Upon powering up after the "touch-and-go", I could only get half the normal take-off power. I managed to circle the field a couple of times and eventually reached an altitude of about 100 feet before making a good landing. The rpm's never recovered as if the motor was starved for fuel, however, the motor did not stall.
July 4, 2004 (flights #44 & #45) - Two crash landings in a row! Motor lost power each time. I was using the cracked gas cap again. Flight #43 was the first flight with the new gas cap and the motor had failed. I had never had any motor failures when using the cracked gas cap up to this time. Likely, this had nothing to do with the gas cap.
I tuned the high speed valve on the carburator between the flights and the motor appeared to be producing full power. However as soon as I took off for the second flight the revs decreased again and I came down pretty hard; luckily, still in the take-off field.
My right knee hurts a bit but I have no serious injuries. There seemed to be some leaked fuel below the carburator so tomorrow I plan to take the paramotor to a small engine repair shop to get it looked at.

Motor stalled at 1080 ft. Forced landing in alternate field.
July 18, 2004 (flight #46) - Took almost 2 weeks to get the carburetor kit replaced. I guess I did not do a great job at tuning the motor. It was not performing perfectly after take-off but it did not appear to be getting worse so I flew over to Le Village historique. I was there a few minutes when I decided to head back to the landing field. The motor quit when I was half way there and I had to make an emergency landing in a field near Le Village. The landing was smooth though a little close to the power lines.
I took the paramotor to a different small engine repair man to re-tune the carburetor. I believe he got the motor going perfectly.

Flight ok after some take-off problems. Damaged composite prop.
September 6, 2004 (flight #53) - 9:30 am. - Tried 5 times, unsuccessfully, to take-off from the school field in West Pubnico. The changing, almost calm wind and the dew on the paraglider did not help. On the fifth try the chute collapsed and pulled me to the side and on the ground. I did not kill the motor in time and the jolt caused the prop to hit the cage.
Not much damage. One end of the prop frayed a bit and will have to be fixed. Some of the string on the prop cage had to be replaced.
I replaced the composite prop woth my spare wooden one and then went to Howard's field in the afternoon for this flight. I flew over to the windmills and over the Village historique. Bumpy flight.

Great low-level flight. Minor damage to wooden prop.
September 23, 2004 (flight #54) - Great flight, first over the Village historique, then over to Abbott's Harbour. After this, a low-level flight along the shoreline to Pubnico Point; much of this at about 50 ft. above the ground. Very exciting at that altitude.
On the way back to Howard's field, about 5 minutes before touch-down, I heard a click and saw something fall from the paramotor. I suspected the gas cap, and after a perfect landing, I realized my suspicion was correct. Somehow, the gas cap came loose and was struck by the wooden propeller. The minor damage to the prop has been repaired with epoxy.
The gas cap has been replaced with a previously damaged one. It should be o.k. until I can get a replacement.
September 24, 2004 - Motor problem discovered during pre-flight motor checkout. Motor would lose power after 30 seconds or so at maximum throttle. I adjusted the high speed screw both ways and only made it worse. Flight cancelled. I will have to take the paramotor to a small engine repair shop. I found some dirt (believed to be finely broken up bits of a house fly) in the fuel line. This was removed; the gas tank was also removed, cleaned and then reinstalled with a new fuel filter. After this, the motor would only run as long as I kept depressing the primer bulb. The local mechanic told me this looked like the carburetor would require cleaning. I remember removing bits of a house fly from the fuel system on July 1 2003 and I have been filtering my fuel ever since. Could it be that I had missed removing some of the fly back then? That's all I can think of.

October 30, 2004 (flight #56) - Great flight
November 23, 2004 - Grounded! Fine afternoon; everything set for the flight. I started the motor as I always do for a pre-flight warm up. The motor started with the first poke of the pull-cord and ran only for a few seconds as if short of fuel. I depressed the primer bulb a couple of times and pulled the cord again; the primer bulb came apart and the motor ran for a few seconds and stopped.
the primer bulb came apart
The primer bulb would not snap back together; I don't know what held it together in the first place. I fould a similar primer bulb made by the same manufacturer and with the same gas line connections, at a local small engine repair shop. It does not have the "pop-rivet" attachment points, however, it was secured in place with silicone rubber compound and I expect it should work fine.
Now, I have to wait for a fine day and some time off from work for my next flying opertunity.

Flew as far as Pubnico Marsh. Wind change. Difficulty getting back. Unscheduled landing.
May 8, 2006 (flight #81) - Very pleasant flight going north as far as the Pubnico Marsh. A warm and gentle NE breeze. Weather outlook: winds calming down to E at 5 km/h for the afternon and evening. Take-off was at 1:25 pm in a NE light breeze at about 12 km/h. After heading back from the Pubnico Marsh about 1 km, the wind suddenly became cold and changed direction to the SW and increased in strength. I was making very little progress getting back to the landing field and the flight became rough. I decided it would be best to find a landing spot than to continue another couple of km. I landed in Middle West Pubnico, on a beach at the end of a road below my dad's house. The touch-down was gentle enough, however, before I could collapse it, the glider pulled me backwards and on the ground. I ended up with a minor abraision on my hand. Nothing serious. No damage to the flying machine. Crazy weather! We never did get the 5 km/h easterly wind.

First flight accompanied with another PPG
May 20, 2006 (flight #82) - Parrsboro Flying Festival, 2006 (see photos). Perfect conditions for me. Flew with Dan York of Five Islands from the beach at the end of the Cochrane Road, Port Greville, Cumberland County. Dan had some difficulty taking off in such a light breeze. His glider needs more of a breeze than my Sting 120. We gained altitude and headed for Diligent River. There had been very little wind on the beach at ground level. Higher up the wind became quite strong. Above the Harvey Allen Hill at Diligent River, I feared I might not have enough fuel to get back to the beach. I was not making much headway against the wind and landed in the landing field which was being used by the Paragliding pilots taking off from the Harvey Allen Hill. I was then driven back to the beach.
Dan York easily made it back to the beach on his own. It was a great flight for the both of us. Dan had to use a back-up propeller after breaking the first one when a beach rock flew from his shoe into it.

September 27, 2006 (flight #85) - I am back in the air. My cardiac surgeon told me flying my paraglider shouldn't aggrevate my condition (mitral valve insufficiency/regurgitation). I am awaiting the date for the surgical repair.
My cousin, Harold Surette, was my ground crew. Short 10 min. flight. Conditions were perfect.

October 06, 2007 (flight #90) - My first flight from the "Johnny Glode Airstrip" on the Pubnico Lake road. The location used to be the homestead of Johnny Glode. The buildings are gone and now the local Remote Control aviators use and maintain the patch of cleared land as their landing strip. They are a very active group, often flying several times a week (especially, Sunday mornings), weather permitting.
From there I flew the short distance to the West Pubnico Golf Course. The weather was warm and clear. All went well. My assistants were Gilbert d'Entremont, Denis Robichaud and Rainier Robichaud.

November 12, 2009 - Accident during take-off attempt. The glider went one way, I went the other way a couple of times thinking I could straighten things out with more power. The wind caught the glider. I fell down to my knees. The propeller caught my right foot. Lots of pain. The ambulance was called in.
I never felt faint or nauseated. I even helped to put away the equipment before the paramedics arrived. I felt ok working on my knees with my right foot in the air. I had too much pain to put that foot down.
One of the paramedics removed my shoe. I expected to see blood but there was very little. I had a bad bruise on the back of the heel where the blade had hit the back of the shoe. The worse was a 2 to 3 inch long cut along the ball of the foot, and quite deep. The blade had cut through the sole of my shoe and into my foot. I was lucky it was not worse.
My friend, Jules (à Joan) d'Entremont, drove me to the Yarmouth Hospital where I was sutured up and sent home.
The black, 48 inch "Fresh Breeze" composite propeller was reduced to shreds and had caught the monofilament lines of the propeller cage after the initial contact with my shoe/foot.
I will have to order a new propeller and some monofilament line to fix the paramotor. The metal cage itself appears unharmed except for a few paint scrapes.
My right foot had gone through the lower part of the cage next to the fuel tank where there were no lines to prevent foot entry to the propeller. I would have thought it almost impossible for me to get my foot into there. But, there you go - Shit Happens!
I should have worn my hiking boots and also hit the kill switch sooner. I will be flying again soon.

July 19, 2010 (flight #128) - A beautiful day and a great flight. I first flew west to photograph North Brother from 2500 feet, then went up to 3100 ft.
The North Brother is a tiny island about 1 km west of Lower West Pubnico, Nova Scotia, Canada.
It is owned by the province and was (with the South Brother) designated a wildlife management area in April 2007.
Access to them during nesting season (April 1 to Aug. 31) is by permit only.
My work on these islands is done in cooperation with Canadian Wildlife Service and the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources. See link to my work on this island in 2010.
My assistant: Nigel D'Eon.

Motor Failure
Nov. 9, 2011 (flight #142) - I flew north as far as Argyle Sound then south along the Pubnico Harbour shore to the wind mills in Lower West Pubnico.
I then headed back to "Howard's field" flying over the Dennis Point wharves and along the shore.
Then, catastrophic engine failure brought me down in the tidal mud, rocks and seaweed below the old d'Entremont Fisheries property in Lower West Pubnico. There was no warning.
Damage - bruised ego more than anything plus a muddy pair of overalls and muddy glider. They were all cleaned up without much fanfare.
The cause - a crack in the fuel line resulting in the motor sucking air instead of fuel.

Good cool flight
March 25, 2012 (flight #143) - The fuel line was replaced a couple of months ago and the motor seems to work fine.
Today, I flew with Tim Malone. Tim had two flights. The first, about 10 minutes; the second, about 30 minutes. Both with excellent take-offs and landings. These were his first flights in Nova Scotia after having taken flying instructions from Eric Dufour (my instructor also) in Florida.
There was very little wind when we took off but it picked up a bit afterwards. It was cold on my "camera hand". I had a glove on the other. No mishaps.
My assistants: Tim Malone and Jules-Léo d'Entremont.

Still windy up there
July 8, 2012 (flight #150) - My plan today was to fly over North Brother for my annual aerial photo. The photo is to compare the yearly erosion of the small island. The flight was going fine at low altitude, but as I reached 2000 ft., the head wind became too strong and I could not get to the island. I was actually going backwards.
I turned around and headed down to le Village historique for a few aerial shots there. See one of them below. All in all, it was a great and pleasant flight.
