The First Duon in Acadia at Port Royal- Jean Baptiste Duon
The paragraphs below were written by H. Léander d'Entremont and published in the Yarmouth Herald, September 10, 1940
Jean-Baptiste Duon came to Acadia before 1713, probably at the beginning of the century, when there were quite a few ships sailing between France and Port Royal, perhaps between 1706 and 1710, while Subercase, the last French Governor of Acadia was in command. This Jean-Baptiste Duon was born at Lyon, France, and was the son of Jean-Louis Duon, a merchant, and Jeanne Clémenceau... He was born in 1680, and died, at Port Royal, May 15, 1746.
This Jean-Baptiste was apparently a very intelligent man, and we find him often appearing before the Council of Port Royal as an advisor for the Acadians who often were before the English Council there. On one occasion he was imprisoned for contempt of Court. He was appointed a Justice of the Peace by the English Governor.
On the 14th February, 1713, in the Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste at Port Royal. he married Agnès Hébert, daughter of Antoine and Jeanne Corporon.
