Duon name changed to D'Eon
The paragraphs below were written by H. Léander d'Entremont and published in the Yarmouth Herald, October 1, 1940
About 50 0r 60 years ago [1880-1890] the Duon family of Pubnico changed their name to d'Eon. According to the late Placide Gaudet, who wrote me on the subject, March 22, 1927, the change was made in a peculiar manner. He wrote; "During my voyage to Pubnico in August, 1893, I made the acquaintance of a Captain Duon who tried to convince me that his name was d'Eon and not Duon. He had made a voyage to France(?) where he had met a French Captain whose name was d'Eon and who assured him that his real name was d'Eon and not Duon, and this brave Captain of West Pubnico believed the French Captain, and immediately took the name of d'Eon, wishing, no doubt, to have the particle "d'" before his name to indicate that his family was of noble birth and equal to that of d'Entremont. Today, we find only d'Eon in Pubnico."
But there was no need of changing the name to make the family more noble than it was. My records show the origin if the Duon family to have been of the highest nobility and, socially, to have been on a par with the best families of France.
